Seasons

These walks can be enjoyed any time of year, and each season brings its own delights. Borrowdale is particularly lovely in spring and autumn. Winter can bring snow and ice.

Centres

Keswick, Rosthwaite, Braithwaite and Buttermere

Difficulty

The valley and lake routes are suitable for nearly all abilities; however, a moderate degree of fitness as well as waterproofs and more robust footwear are recommended for higher walks. Basic navigation skills are valuable for the higher routes and in poor weather. In particular, the inexperienced should avoid Skiddaw in poor weather.

Must See

Borrowdale’s ancient woods; the lakes of Derwentwater, Crummock Water and Buttermere; Castlerigg Stone Circle; traditional Lakeland pubs; cosy cafes; isolated hamlets; fell-top viewpoints, including Cat Bells and Castle Crag; picturesque bridges, including Ashness Bridge; low ridges; lake cruises; birds of prey and other wildlife; summit of Skiddaw, England’s fourth highest mountain

Cicerone Short Walks Lake District Coniston and Langdale

Seasons

Best walking conditions are in spring, summer and autumn. In winter, short days, bad weather or snow and ice cover can make some walks difficult. Climbing the Old Man should be avoided in winter.

Centres

Coniston, Hawkshead, Elterwater, Chapel Stile, New and Old Dungeon Ghyll

Difficulty

Mostly easy walking requiring no special equipment. However, there are some short, steep ascents and descents, which might be rocky or stony, where more care is needed. The ascent of the Old Man is steep, stony and prolonged and should only be attempted in good weather.

Must See

Coniston Water, Coniston Coppermines, other mines and slate quarries, Old Man of Coniston, Tarn Hows, Hawkshead, Elterwater, Little Langdale, Great Langdale, Stickle Tarn, Blea Tarn

Weight: 560g

Seasons: Predominantly spring and summer, but with advice on timed round attempts in the winter from the current record holder, Jim Mann.
Centres: England: Keswick/Ambleside/Wasdale Wales: Capel Curig/Blaenau Ffestiniog/Betws Coed/Llanberis/Ogwen Scotland: Fort William/Fersit
Difficulty: Each of the three rounds is presented as a 24-hour running challenge, and a week-long backpacking circuit. Both of these options are genuine challenges for experienced outdoors people. However, there is additional information for those who prefer a more relaxed pace. All of the routes are also described as day trips and/or as 'sections' of smaller running or backpacking routes.
Must See: The Big Rounds - running and walking the Bob Graham, the Paddy Buckley and the Charlie Ramsay rounds - is a guide to Britain's three most challenging long-distance mountain rounds, and the people who love them. These routes are grand, circular tours of the Lake District, Snowdonia and Lochaber, and the book includes a full guide to each round for both walkers and runners, the history of each round, and advice from running and backpacking experts.

Launching in 2017, the Hebridean Way offers walkers the opportunity to experience the magic of Scotland's Outer Hebrides in one inspirational journey. The waymarked route stretches 247km (155 miles) from Vatersay to Stornaway, linking ten major islands of the archipelago by means of causeways and two ferry crossings: Vatersay, Barra, Eriskay, South Uist, Benbecula, Grimsay, North Uist, Berneray, Harris and Lewis. Suitable for most walkers with a moderate level of fitness, it can be completed in 8–14 days and is rich in natural, historical and cultural interest.

This guidebook presents the Hebridean Way in 10 stages of 16–35km (10–22 miles), plus two additional stages to extend the route to the Butt of Lewis in line with future plans. Detailed route description is accompanied by 1:50,000 OS mapping, stunning photography to whet your appetite and a wealth of information about local points of interest. The introduction offers an overview of the islands' geology, history, plants and wildlife as well as comprehensive practical advice for walking the route, such as when to go, how to get there (and back) and what to take. Accommodation listings can be found in the appendices.

The route is a celebration of the diverse landscapes of the Hebrides, from dazzling white shell beaches to wild moorland and flower-strewn machair. It visits Neolithic and Bronze Age remains, ruined forts and castles and monuments commemorating Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Highland Land Struggle. The islands are also a great location to spot seabirds, raptors and a number of migratory species. Informative and inspiring, Richard Barrett's guidebook is an ideal companion to discovering this captivating route.
